Configure Organization Structure for SAP PM-EAM

We will see how we configure the organization structure used for Enterprise asset management/Plant maintenance. Following figure shows the detailed organization structure of SAP PM.

Refer to Organization structure chart for SAP PM/EAM process.

Note : Client, controlling area, company code and maintenance plant will be made available by Basis, FICO and MM consultant.  As a SAP EAM/PM consultant, you will start your configuration activity starting from defining Maintenance planning plant.

1) Maintenance planning plant :

Plant which is responsible for carrying out all maintenance activities in a particular maintenance plant.
->  One maintenance plant can be linked with only one planning plant.
->  One planning plant can be linked with multiple maintenance plant.
In a manufacturing company ABC, assume that you have a manufacturing plant located in any geographical location.  As par SAP structure, you have to define a planning plant to carry out maintenance activities.
SPRO Menu Path
Maintenance plant should exist already with the same name.

Once you click on execute icon, screen for maintaining new plant will appear. There you have to click on New Entries button. Following screen will appear.

Here you can maintain you plant as a maintenance planning plant.

Note :  Plant code you enter in above screen should be created as a plant first. Then only system will allow you to maintain that plant as a maintenance planning plant.

2) Assign Maintenance planning plant to a Maintenance plant.

Maintenance planning plant is assigned to a maintenance plat for which it is responsible to carry out all Maintenance activities.
->   One maintenance plant can be assigned to only one planning plant
->   One planning plant can be assigned to multiple maintenance plants.

Here you enter the assignment of plant and Save the entries.

3) Create Location for a Plant

A location allows a plant to be classified according to spatial or situation criteria. It means you can assume hierarchical division of a plant using locations.
You want to create a location within a plant
SPRO Menu Path
Display IMG > ENTERPRISE STRUCTURE > DEFINATION > Logistics - General > Define Location
Plant should exist for which you want to create a location.

Click on execute button and click on New entries. Following screen will appear.

Save your entries. Locations are created now. If you use Asset Management in your system, you can assign each fixed asset to one of these locationsThe following master data objects can be assigned to these locations:
  • Asset master records of Asset Management
  • pieces of equipment
  • functional locations
  • work centers
  • production resources/tools
4) Create Plant Section

The plant section enables you to subdivide the maintenance plant from the point of view of production responsibility. The person responsible for the plant section is the contact for coordination between production and plant maintenance. The plant section can be used for evaluation purposes.
Create a plant section for a plant
SPRO Menu Path
Display IMG > Plant Maintenance and Customer Service > Technical Objects > General Data > Define Plant Sections

What is Enterprise Asset Management?

Enterprise Asset Management or Plant Maintenance means "complete management of organizational assets through regular maintenance processing in order to have effective utilization of assets for better productivity and maximize the value returns".
Conventional Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) focus on asset maintenance – record keeping, tracking, maintenance planning, work orders, scheduling and cost management
Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) systems extend this model to include resource management such as labor, subcontractors, external services procurement, materials, tools and equipment by incorporating integrated inventory & purchasing capabilities.
Enterprise Asset Management

Since there are many different types of plants and factories, the ways to maintain these facilities often vary. For example, a steel mill will have different machinery than a food processing plant. This means that each place of business generally has its own maintenance planning procedures and criteria.

In any Plant or a factory, regular maintenance is required for Equipment, machinery, tools, fleets, production resources, fixed assets, Current assets etc.

In general,Maintenance activity can be of following types.

1) Preventive
2) Breakdown
3) Corrective
4) Reliability centered maintenance (Reliability Engineering)
5) Condition based maintenance
6) Predictive Maintenance

Depending upon the business scenarios, maintenance periods, maintenance cycles are defined.

There are many tools and software products like IBM MAXIMO, Microsoft Dynamix AX, SAP EAM, IFS EAM are being utilized for plant maintenance activities and tracking the same. SAP EAM is the best application which is integrated with other application components of ERP.

SAP Plant maintenance/EAM can be integrated with asset performance management and document management utilities like Meridium/ blue celio etc.

Introduction to SAP PM

The R/3 Plant Maintenance (PM) module is the application component that provides a comprehensive software solution for all maintenance activities that are performed within a company.
Data and functions of all maintenance procedures performed within a company can be fully interconnected making this module closely integrated with other modules like Materials Management (MM), Production Planning (PP), Sales & Distribution (SD), Controlling (CO) ,Human Resource ( HR/CATS).
The openness of the R/3 System enables you to use external systems that are integrated with the Plant Maintenance (PM) component, such as geographical information systems (GIS), computer-aided design (CAD) systems and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, Remote Crane Management Systems ( RCMS).

International standards of Asset Management : SAPPM/EAM complies with Asset management standards PAS55 and ISO 55000 series

SAP PM/EAM module is subdivided into following process and functions in order to cover the complete Maintenance process across industries.

1) Management of Technical Objects :
2) Maintenance Processing
3) Preventive Maintenance
4) Asset Management
5) Warranty Processing
6) Work Clearance Management.
